We are in a new world, a world that is starving for authenticity and meaning. Starving for experiences that are unique and worthwhile, products that are relevant and brands that stand for something we can believe in. In a word, we are starving for culture. At Cause+Affect Design, we help our clients define, celebrate and communicate their culture through the development of innovative ideas, products and spectacles.

Following her return to Vancouver and the founding of Cause+Affect, Jane also co-founded Jorg&Olif, the sustainable lifestyle company. As creative director, Jane developed the brand from local start-up to an internationally recognized and trendsetting brand sold to a UK based fashion and lifestyle company.

As Managing Director, Jane leads Cause+Affect’s brand services which are represented through a diverse range of culturally influential projects including Fuse at The Vancouver Art Gallery, EPIC-The Sustainable Living Expo, Volkswagen’s Green Guts, Jacqueline Conoir and the globally renown Pecha Kucha Nights.

Cause+Affect formed by Jane and Steven Cox.

Founded by Steven & Jane Cox in 2004, Cause+Affect represents years of collective experience in leading Architecture, Brand and Design firms across Canada and the UK.

In London from 1998-2003, our work within the real estate, retail, cultural and travel industries brought projects to market for globally influential companies including Tishman Speyer, Blackstone Properties, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Stanhope, Sellar Property Group, Selfridges, and the Victoria&Albert Museum.

In Vancouver, Cause+Affect has worked with real estate leaders including Concord Pacific, Westbank Development Corp and Rize Alliance Properties; we have consulted with cultural institutions including The Vancouver Art Gallery, The Museum of West Vancouver and the Museum of Vancouver; and we have created numerous brands, initiatives and experiences for clients including The Vancouver Economic Development Commission, Volkswagen, The Globe Foundation of Canada and The City of Vancouver.

Combining the service and scope of advertising, marketing and design companies, Cause+Affect is not limited by medium or industry. In contrast, our diverse track record of projects and clients has given us a reputation that has become especially appealing to our peers and we work hard to develop projects that will resonate with them. Through this critical design thinking and practice, we continue to use our unique process to help businesses, communities and cities evolve and prosper.

SERVICES
Cause+Affect offers a gamut of services that range from top-level business and creative strategy development to the design and execution of a new brand identity. We offer all these services as one continuum of work or can insert ourselves in at any level with a mind towards your end goals. As each client is unique, we do not offer formulaic solutions. Instead, we customize our approach for every given situation.

Business Strategy - We help our clients define or redefine their business model before diving into the brand strategy process so the investment in creative and strategic services maximizes the opportunities for success. When we are through, our clients’ creative strategy works lock-step with their organization’s operating strategy. Areas of interest can include global trend forecasting, business modelling, product/service viability, focus groups, and organizational restructuring.

Brand Strategy and Development - This process involves research and strategy to help our clients articulate who they are and what they represent. Once it is complete, we will help them express their value and uniqueness through a lasting brand identity. This process involves the creation of a brand vision, story, positioning, tone of voice, naming and logo identity.

Marketing & Communications - In this phase, we develop a marketing strategy and select the most appropriate channels to communicate our client’s message. We then design a series of brand experiences to achieve the greatest impact within the most efficient budget. These experiences can be expressed through print and on-line advertising, photography, video, website, social media campaigns, events, exhibitions and architectural interventions.

VISION
The Co-operative Auto Network, known as the Car Co-op to its members, has provided carsharing to Metro Vancouverites since 1997, but lacked a brand identity that reflected its exceptional service and distinguished history. To attract new members and stand out from its competitors, it contacted Cause+Affect to reconstruct its brand and to design the accompanying communication materials.

SOLUTION
The new brand has a simple, memorable name: Modo. We crafted an image for Modo that borrowed from European signage. It was cool, yet timeless with bold colours and basic shapes to make Modo recognizable and memorable. We avoided obvious “green” imagery because Modo is more than just sustainable; it is also economical, convenient and fun. We designed a rack card, post cards, signage and a new website that used language that was direct, smart and accessible.

RESULT
The launch of the new brand took place at City Hall and was attended by Mayor Gregor Robertson. Recognition of the brand has increased considerably and Modo connects both with loyal members and those unfamiliar with the concept of carsharing.

VISION
Jacqueline Conoir, one of Vancouver’s leading fashion houses, contracted Cause+Affect to completely re-invent its brand in 2010. C+A has since continued on as its brand steward for its modern and confident Spring/Summer 2011 collection and to honour its 25 year history of glamour and style.

SOLUTION
Cause+Affect designed a new image for Jacqueline Conoir that appeals to young audiences, but respects its history and remains true to its core values of sophistication and glamour. A new logo was crafted that is elegant and understated while print and web materials have carefully packaged the display of the new collection. Featuring prominently within the new brand has been our successful collaboration with stylist Luis Rino and photographer Evaan Kheraj.

RESULT
Cause+Affect continues to be Jacqueline Conoir’s brand guardian producing all brand materials moving forward. We are currently collaborating with them on an exciting new project that will debut at Jacqueline Conoir’s Fall/Winter 2011 fashion show.

VISION
Vancouverism was a traveling exhibition about Vancouver architecture and design that showed in London and Paris before coming home to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. It featured graphic displays of many of Vancouver’s most well known architects and engineers including Arthur Erickson, Bing Thom and James Cheng. Cause+Affect created the brand and communication materials for Vancouverism and went on to design the traveling European exhibition and the re-designed exhibition for Woodwards.

SOLUTION
Our multidisciplinary approach allowed us to take on this project from all angles, from the design and installation of the exhibit to the creation of a website, brochure and posters that needed to compete with a variety of communications during London’s design week. Our background in architecture and commitment to Vancouver design was a perfect fit for this project and we are proud to have been a part of it.

RESULT
The Guardian described Vancouverism as “no demure Canadian exhibition. This is architecture as performance art.” For the final phase of the project that saw Vancouverism come to Vancouver, we installed an expanded exhibition in the Woodwards Atrium for the Olympics, a celebration of Vancouver design and architecture during a celebration of national and civic achievement.

VISION
The steering committee for the International Ideas Competition, Townshift hired Cause+Affect to develop a brand for the competition that sought innovative ideas for five of Surrey’s town centres: Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Guildford, Semiahmoo, and Newton. Based on the overwhelming success of the competition, TownShift evolved into a city-wide initiative to actively explore, discuss and imagine a better future for Surrey, which will soon be BC’s largest city.

SOLUTION
Cause+Affect designed all brand assets and collateral for the project including identity, poster, website and exhibition. The logo incorporates colourful silhouettes of each town centre’s border to represent the unity of the project, while communicating the individual design focus and personality of each town centre.

RESULT
Surrey received 137 different entries from established designers and involved citizens from 23 countries. Some of the ideas submitted are shaping current building proposals and the entire project has initiated a public discussion about ways to make Surrey more livable and sustainable, proving that Surrey lives up to its civic slogan “The Future Lives Here.” As the final phase of the project, Cause+Affect designed a collection of six books, one for each town centre and a sixth of public commentary, to commemorate the project.

VISION
One of the mandates of Cause+Affect was to continually improve the cultural currency of Vancouver. Pecha Kucha Nights represented an amazing opportunity to develop a local event series that with the right choreography would reach outside of the niche design market and affect a wider audience. Started in Tokyo by Klein Dytham Architects, PKN has become a global phenomenon of which we are very proud to be the Vancouver producers.

SOLUTION
Starting with audiences of 200, PKN Vancouver has brought together an incredibly diverse group of speakers allowing audiences a level of inspiration not found in other events within Vancouver. From Architects to Graphic Designers to Politicians to Activists to Illustrators to Entertainers, PKN is the perfect combination of a social event with cultural significance.

RESULT
Cause+Affect continue to produce this ever increasingly popular night. This unique experience now draws 1500+ audiences and continues to sell out all events, building a pride in Vancouver that is truly unprecedented.

CAUSE+AFFECT’S
BACK TO SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - 09 . 20 . 2011

“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” – Seneca

We’re shaped by the cities we call home, but it’s the inspiration of travel that often sparks the next big idea. With that in mind, the Cause+Affect team have been staggering their summer vacations right at the edge of the season to investigate how other cities operate - cities like Montreal and New York, Portland and San Francisco, Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as the lakes of Ontario and the home base of Winnipeg.
Not that we lack for things to do at home. The office has been humming with new and ongoing projects and it doesn’t look to let up anytime soon. Read on for details.

Ittatsoo Bay

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30314/359552/Ittatsoo.png" border="0" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30314/359552/Ittatsoo_o.png" align="left" />
Words and even still images alone often fall short when describing the beauty, scale and potential of Ittatsoo Bay. That’s why we once again collaborated with the brilliant minds of Salazar to capture it through a wonderful short film. Along with the creation of the identity, film and website, we continue to develop communication materials where you can learn more about the ten-acre properties currently for sale and the vision for what will become one of the West Coast’s most authentic communities.

You can see it and more at www.ittatsoobay.com

We rarely do projects outside of Vancouver, but we are very excited about a current project we have taken on in Calgary. We are creating the brand and marketing materials for what will be the tallest residential development in Calgary. We have named the project The Guardian to signify its role as a purveyor of high quality, well considered development. Its prodigious height was also a considerable factor as it not only has the ability to watch over the city, but also most of Alberta. Project sales will launch in early 2012.

Modo’s PHEV (Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

Ever since the Modo rebrand, we’ve been seeing and hearing about their cars all over the place. We’ve even heard that membership has gone up 40 percent! We continue to serve as Modo’s brand guardians and recently designed the graphics and communications for its first Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) that was made possible by a Community Project Grant from Vancity. Modo members can pick it for a zero-emission spin (it can run entirely electricity for up to 40 kilometres) behind the Vancity Kitsilano Community Branch. Just remember to plug it back in when done!

David Martin Law Corp.

David Martin and his associates are specialists in white collar criminal defence, domestic constitutional litigation and international criminal defence. David also happens to be a client behind the Ittatsoo Bay project and has a fascinating history of defending civil rights and fighting for the environment. We wanted to create a brand for him that reflected his expertise and professionalism above all else, but also showed that he and his associates are people who roll up their sleeves, put in long hours and believe in what they do.

Our design and strategy work continues for NOW Developments. Communication materials for their new development at Fraser & 27th are out and about as they release their first phase of homes. Understanding that to foster sustainable urban living spaces, they have to provide amenities like carsharing and oversized bike storage, Fraser & 27th will be a welcome addition to what is become a very interesting neighborhood. For more information, please register on their website and be entered into a draw to win a year of Pecha Kucha tickets.

For Your Inspiration is a new arts initiative that invites you to discover Vancouver’s award-winning, boundary-breaking, thought-provoking, breathtaking, world-class homegrown arts. We worked with them to create a publication to show that this city takes inspiration from around the world and produces world-class culture that is unique to our home.

Our latest client, New Works is a non-profit, charitable organization that produces all sorts of dance for all sorts of people. A think tank of artists and arts administrators, New Works mentors, manages and supports a roster of talented dancers and dance companies. We are very pleased to work with them to develop a brand to live up to their energy and excellence.

Sandvault

We have been fortunate enough to partner with many local innovative thinkers through our work with BikeshareBC, an owner/operator team competing to initiate Vancouver’s first Public Bikeshare System (PBS). One of the key players on the team has been SandVault, a longtime pioneer in the PBS realm and also our newest client. We are thrilled to be helping them evolve their brand, first with a new identity and website and soon to come, a series of communication tools for what is a growing global marketplace.

Applied Arts

So we didn’t win any awards in the recent Applied Arts awards issue (it may be because we didn’t enter to win any), but they did run a six-page editorial on us, which is pretty nice. Kidding aside, Kevin Brooker wrote a great piece and we’re grateful for the exposure.
